"I can't even express how much I love this book! I didn't want this story to end!"--Reese Witherspoon

"Painfully beautiful."--The New York Times Book Review

For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life--until the unthinkable happens.

Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

Great title ! Builds up curiosity immediately . Story line written clearly , excellent description of the swamp and how kya became the swamp ! Whether the story is entirely believable or not , writer makes it very difficult to question the character of Kya despite the huge anomalies with real life expectations and understandings . Beautiful build up of characters ,the psycho social aspects of the characters ,all keep you glued yo the book . The swamp creatures were great teachers of life, death ,philosophy, abd survival ! what a great student Kya was! If only we were all that good !Ending was totally fitting to the character of Kya Loved the book for what it is without questioning if it is logical !probably not 😊

After everyone recommending I read this book I finally sat down and read it in one sitting. The story enwrapped me from beginning to end and the characters stayed with me for weeks after. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because of how the story was wrapped up. In order to reveal something in the end the author forwarded the story many years and a lot got lost for me there. I know life most of the time doesn’t tie most loose ends, but I felt there wasn’t fair retribution to the main characters. It just left a bad taste in my mouth.

I am from Southern parents - but only after reading this vibrantly descriptive writing did I want to be Southern! I could not put this book down until I read it start to finish! And I will want to read it again, just to be enveloped into this world alongside Kya.
