PARSIFAL

or the Legend of The Holy Grail retold from Antient

Sources with acknowledgement to the Parsifal of

Richard Wagner by T. W. Rolleston.

Presented by Willy Pogany

PUBLISHED: ,George G. Harrap & Co Ltd London 1912

4to., First Edition, original grey/green cloth, ornate gilt

lettering and decorations plus coloured pictorial stamping

to upper board, gilt lettering to spine, grey pictorial

endpapers printed in three colours, un paginated, illustrated

by Willy Pogany with  16 full-page stunning mounted

colour plates with decorative borders to mounts. Other

full-page colour plates. Beautiful “illuminated” half-title

and title pages, every page decorated or illustrated

including many  full page, most pages printed in two

colours, orange and black, calligraphic text, light wear

to corners and edges of binding, spine darkened,

mild age toning to page edges, overall

a very good firm copy.

Willy Pogany’s remarkable interpretation of this Wagner

story is a masterpiece of the era. Along with his two other

Wagner books, Tannhauser and Lohengrin, and the

Samuel Coleridge’s, Rime of the Ancient Mariner,

published between 1911 and 1913, Parsifal stands as one

of the great illustrated books of the Golden Age,

profusely illustrated and decorated throughout, with

wonderful attention to the design,

both inside and out.

A fabulous book, highly collectable with the original first

issue gilt decorated covers. The true 1st edition 1st issue

of this lavish production, Pogany’s Parsifal 1st edition,

as this copy, is quite different from the many re-issues

that followed. These were all generally a smaller format,

with fewer pages, less colour plates and much more basic

page designs, and often without Pogany’s original

calligraphic text.

First Pogany trade edition, dated MCMXII (1912) to

last page as recorded by Robin Greer (Willy Pogany

bibliography, IBIS Journal 1).
