This personal memoir was written by Jeanne Campan, Marie

Antoinette’s first lady-in-waiting. First published in England

and France in 1823, it has become a primary source of

information for both historians and sociologists. Madame

Campan was "a gifted and exceptionally well-educated

woman, reader to Louis XV’s daughters, and then a devoted

lady-in-waiting to Marie Antoinette" (Reid, 85).

Marie Antoinette (1755-1793) was born an Archduchess

of Austria, the 15th and penultimate child of Emperor Francis

1 and Maria Theresa. She was Dauphine of France from

1770-1774 and Queen of France and Navarre from 1774-1792.

She was married to Louis XVI. After he was deposed and

executed, she was tried for treason, found guilty, and

met her death by guillotine in 1793.
