*Thomas W. Knox ( 1835 - 1896 )

A self-proclaimed wandering American was a prodigious travel

writer of the late nineteenth century. He received his training as

a writer prior to and during the Civil War. As a war

correspondent for the New York Herald, Knox ran afoul of

General Grant when he published information concerning troop

locations, which Grant believed aided the enemy. Subsequently

Knox was court-martialed for giving intelligence to the enemy,

and of being a spy. Through a personal appeal to President

Lincoln, his conviction was revoked, but he never regained the

good graces of Grant.

MISTAPIM IN CAMBODIA

PUBLISHED: London Hodder & Stoughton. 1960

8vo., First Edition, original green cloth with gilt lettered spine,

in its pictorial dust wrapper, rubbed and worn at corners and

edges, name on front free endpaper, 1/2 title, pp. 192,

Christopher Pym, the "Mistapim" of the title, returned to Cambodia in 1956 and spent nearly two years there, learning
about Khmer civilization at first hand.

He lived in a Chinese temple, teaching English and learning

Khmer; crossed a flooded plain to see the ancient ruins of

Bantei Chhmar;

had a private audience with the King; went to a royal

command performance of the Khmer ballet, with its dancers in

resplendent shot-silk, velvet and cloth-of-gold. He met the jazz-

playing Prince Norodom Sihanouk, who had given up his

kingdom in order to become Prime Minister and organise a

people's congress on the lines of Athenian democracy.
